Well it would facilitate to have a rep of soe kind of advocate. But it's not a mandatory requirement. But being a defense attorney before a prosecutor will lend a hand you a lot as you can know both sides of the arguement and use that to your advantage.
It usually works the other way around. Most people who become public defender first usually either stay there, or move to private practice. The DA's tend to distrust former public defender. However, it's not uncommon for former DAs to become defense attorneys.
Go figure...
Most public defender, legal aid and prosecutors come to the job straight out of regulation school.
