What does the defense attorney do?

ok so our class is doing a mock trial thing. I don't want to be the actual lawyer that question the witnesses and stuff, but i heard that sometimes theres two defense attorneys and one of them just does the losing the scenses, planing out the case types stuff. I just needed to know if in that actually people who do that, what they do, etc.

I own to write a paper about why i should be that being so any info about that would be helpful. appreciation
