The client gets to choose the desired outcome and the legal representative is ethically bound to use his/her professional skills to try to achieve that goal. However, the advocate is also bound to give sound direction about other options and the possibility of achieving that goal. For prosecutors, the client is the associates and the people have instructed the prosecutor, through the legislature, to "wish justice." The defense attorney must ask the client what goal to hope. Here is a question, if the successful defense of one client would require persuading an appellate court to adopt a rule of law, and that rule would be detrimental to other adjectives clients, how would you handle that?
