If I needed to become a legal representative, would it be better to become a defense attorney or a prosecutor? And why?
I think it would be cool to be a lawyer. Which one do you consider would be a better choice, and why?

Depends on what u want to do, safeguard criminals or protect the innocent. Which could go either passageway. You have to decide! Only you can engineer that choice!
if you want to get a ton of money, be a defense attorney.
if you want to have morals and help society, become a prosecutor.
remember, here are other types of lawyers besides these two, there also ones that specialize within disability lawsuits, medical lawsuits, etc.

defense attorneys are normally considered doomed to failure people, but that doesn't mean that they are. you would enjoy no way of knowing if the person is in truth innocent because if they told you they did it, (correct me if I'm wrong, but this is what i remember from a basic undergrad law class, I'm not a lawyer) if they told you they did the crime, that does not drop under attorney privilege and you would have to disclose that information.... i could be wrong... but, how would you know who is in truth innocent. plus, you wouldn't get a lot of cases that style.
You probably want to start on the defense so you can represent all the bullcrap cases and get your expierence...later move up to harder ones and once you get tired of getting guilty people past its sell-by date go to the other side!

I'm a defense attorney practicing criminal law at state court contained by California. I think that many of the posters here are writing what they know from tube.
1) The best place to start would be a prosecutor or a public defender. You will find that they are paid like. In places like San Francisco, LA or San Diego, it's about 100k near benefits.
2) Both sides work just as hard. Both sides hold scumbags. Remember that it's DAs with the public trust, the army of police, the investigators, the experts. I've known DAs to fur evidence, abuse power and generally be evil. Remember that the greater scumbag is the one who abuse more power. There are plenty of shifty defense attorney's, but hey, they have no power.
3) You don't want to start out in private practice, even working for a firm. You can nick greater risks with cases where inhabitants haven't paid.
4) The very best cases within the world are in-prison crime. These I currently specialize in at the level four (the superlative security) prison in California. The cases are hyper-violent and both the guards and prisoners are untrustworthy sketchy witnesses who are a blast to cross examine.
5) Prosecutors have to build cases and hold them together. Defense attorney's procure to attack cases when they choose and have more control of the timing of things. You have to agree on which appeal to you.
6) Neither side holds the moral high ground. Both are required by the Constitution and both are required to do the best job possible for the system to work. In the cases I've lost, I've pushed to the max, I've never feel bad about the relations who got convicted because I know they got equality.
7) Be prepared to work like a maniac through lawschool. Focus on criminal law. Intern at DAs office or public defender offices. Think in the region of where you want to live very in moderation.
